YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING
You can begin
with willingness.
You don’t have to settle every question about belief before you ask for help.
A personal understanding
The Steps use the words “God as we understood Him.” That wording allows space for a personal understanding rather than requiring a particular religion.
People come to AA with faith, with doubts, and with no religious belief. You can listen to how other people understand a higher power while allowing yourself time to explore.
Start with a question
You might ask an experienced member what helped them become willing to accept support beyond their own efforts. There is room to say, “I’m not sure yet.”
An introductory reflection, not an official interpretation. AA: all faiths and beliefs
